What it is studied for

The methylated cobalamin form, used as a cofactor in methylation research and stocked because it appears in the same protocols as the metabolic compounds.

About B12

Methylcobalamin is not a peptide at all, and sits in this catalogue because it appears alongside the metabolic compounds rather than because it resembles them. It is a cobalamin: a corrin ring wrapped around a single cobalt atom, with a methyl group bound directly to that cobalt.

That cobalt–carbon bond is the unusual part. Organometallic bonds of this kind are rare in biology, and it is what makes the molecule a methyl donor rather than simply a source of cobalt. Only two cobalamin forms carry it — methylcobalamin and adenosylcobalamin — which is why cyanocobalamin, the cheaper form sold as a supplement, is not interchangeable with this one in methylation work.

The cobalt–carbon bond is also light-sensitive. A solution left on a bench under normal room lighting degrades measurably, which is why this ships as a solution in an amber vial and should be kept dark as well as cold.

Handling

Bring the vial to room temperature before opening, add diluent slowly down the inside wall rather than onto the powder, and let it dissolve undisturbed — no shaking. Store refrigerated on arrival, and refrigerate the solution once reconstituted.

The full method, and a calculator for the draw volume at any fill weight and diluent combination.

Questions

How is Methylcobalamin B12 supplied?

Methylcobalamin in solution, 10 ml vial. It ships in unbranded outer packaging that lists no contents. Store refrigerated on arrival. The lyophilised powder is stable in transit at ambient temperature.

How is B12 reconstituted?

Bacteriostatic water is the usual diluent. Run it down the inside wall of the vial rather than onto the powder and let it dissolve without shaking. With 10 ml in the vial, the diluent volume you choose sets the final concentration. The reconstitution calculator on this site works out the draw volume for any combination.
