About Glutathione

Glutathione is a tripeptide of glutamate, cysteine and glycine, and its structure carries one irregularity that explains most of its behaviour. The bond joining glutamate to cysteine runs from glutamate's side-chain carboxyl rather than its backbone one — a gamma linkage instead of the usual alpha. Written properly it is gamma-glutamylcysteinylglycine.

Ordinary peptidases cut alpha bonds and leave gamma bonds alone, so the molecule survives inside the cell where a conventional tripeptide would be dismantled. It is a short peptide that behaves like a stable metabolite.

The cysteine's thiol group is the reactive part, and the reason this vial says "reduced". Two glutathione molecules readily join at those thiols to form the oxidised dimer GSSG, and that conversion happens in solution on contact with air. The ratio between the two forms is the measurement most redox work is actually after, which makes handling unusually consequential here: reconstitute immediately before use, keep it cold and dark, and do not store the solution.

Handling
