What it is studied for

About NMN

NMN is a nucleotide, not a peptide, and it sits here because it belongs to the same research questions as the mitochondrial compounds rather than because it resembles them.

Its position in the pathway is the whole reason it exists as a separate product. Most NAD+ in mammalian cells — around 85% — is recycled through the salvage pathway rather than built from scratch. That pathway has two steps: NAMPT converts nicotinamide to NMN, then NMNAT converts NMN to NAD+. NAMPT is the rate-limiting step, the bottleneck the whole pathway queues behind.

Supplying NMN enters the pathway after that bottleneck. Supplying plain nicotinamide enters before it, where the same rate limit applies. That difference is the entire rationale for the molecule, and it is why NMN and nicotinamide are not interchangeable despite nicotinamide being far cheaper.

Nicotinamide riboside, sold alongside it elsewhere, is one step further back again: it lacks NMN's phosphate group and has to be phosphorylated before it can continue. This catalogue also stocks NAD+ itself, which skips the pathway entirely — the three of them are the comparison a precursor-supply experiment is usually set up to make.

Handling
